Market Conditions 7/3/2016-7/9/2016

This week's market has shown a decrease in load to truck demand in most markets. Collectively, spot market loads decreased 3% while truck availability increased 3% compared to last week. When taking all averages, reefer rates dropped 1.5%, van rates decreased 1%, and flatbed rates have decreased by 0.5% compared to last week's rates. Taking an average of rate points from various metrics, we have found the national average rates to be the following: Reefer: $1.98/mi, Van: $1.65/mi, Flatbed: $1.96/mi.

Load densities on a national average remained high this week for van, reefer, and flatbed freight. As displayed below, load to truck ratios dropped later in the week. Production and shipping is expected to decrease for all three equipment types.

Refrigerated Freight

The following states had the highest truckload volumes this past week: Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, South Carolina, and North Carolina. Georgia and Florida are slowing down as the fresh produce shifts northward. Freight volume out of Arizona continues to remain low, this is most pronounced at the Nogales border crossing. Laredo and McAllen, TX are seeing similar changes.

As expected, the higher volumes have transitioned further north this week with melons, mixed vegetables, corn, and berries being harvested. Minnesota, the Dakotas, and Washington still remain loose, shipping potatoes, onions and various finished goods. Arkansas, southern Missouri, and southern Illinois are shipping chicken and mixed produce. Blueberries and peaches are shipping out of North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. Produce will continue to progress further north in the next few weeks as we continue through the summer months.

Dry Freight

Load availability decreased 2% on a national average this week while truck availability decreased by 3%. Spot rates are highest in the sunbelt region of the United States. States with higher freight densities include Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, and the Carolina's. California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Georgia are shipping melons and onions on vented vans in order to ship the required orders.

Diesel Pricing

Fuel prices dropped slightly this week, bringing the national average price at $2.423 per gallon. This marks a $0.409 drop from the same week last year.
