Market Conditions 7/31/2016-8/6/2016

This week's market presented us with a decrease in load to truck demand on a national scale. Collectively, spot market loads decreased 2% while truck availability remained relatively flat compared to last week. When taking all averages, reefer rates remained flat, van rates decreased by 0.5% and flatbed rates remained flat compared to last week's rates. Taking an average of rate points from various metrics, we have found the national average rates to be the following: Reefer: $1.99/mi, Van: $1.68/mi, Flatbed: $1.90/mi.

Rates continues to drop in the Southern and Southeastern regions on the U.S. while rates increased overall in the Northeast and Midwest. The Northeast and upper Midwest regions are shipping higher than normal volumes of freight helping to keep the national average steady.

Refrigerated Freight

The following states had the highest truckload volumes this past week: Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Maine. Georgia, Alabama, and South Carolina are slowing down as the fresh produce shifts northward.

As expected, the higher volumes have transitioned further north with melons, mixed vegetables, corn, and berries being harvested. Michigan blueberries and cucumbers are picking up in volume. Delaware and New Jersey are shipping their corn and blueberry crops. Arkansas, southern Missouri, and Illinois are shipping chicken and mixed produce. Produce will continue to progress further north in the next few weeks as we continue through the summer months.

Dry Freight

Load availability increased on a national average this week while truck availability stayed flat. States with higher freight densities include Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama, Virginia and the Carolina's.
