Market Conditions 10/9/2016-10/15/2016

This week's market demand has remained relatively again this week. Load availability increased 2% and truck availability increased by 2%. When taking all averages, reefer rates remained flat, van rates increased by 0.5%, and flatbed rates increased by 1%. Taking an average of rate points from various metrics, we have found the national average rates to be the following: Reefer: $1.95/mi, Van: $1.68/mi, Flatbed: $1.91/mi.

Refrigerated Freight

The Upper Midwest and Northwest regions of the U.S. are still shipping high volumes of produce. Upstate New York is shipping apples and is tight with local cabbage and cucumbers. The Buffalo and Rochester markets have the densest load to truck rations in the region. Eastern North Carolina is shipping sweet potatoes. Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota have tight markets, shipping potatoes. Washington state has remained tight again this week shipping apples, potatoes and onions. Fall ornamentals are moving out of Colorado and the Midwest. California has seen an uptick in volume but rates to the east coast still remain low compared to years past. Melons, stone fruit, grapes and mixed vegetables are all shipping out of California. The Upper Midwest markets are beginning to slow down. Washington, Oregon, and Idaho have remained tight with load densities in certain markets of over 15 loads for each available truck.

Look for melons and avocados to begin shipping over the border in TX and AZ this upcoming weeks. The south and Southeast will continue to increase the volumes of squash, eggplant, peppers, and onions moving out.

Dry Freight

On a national average, load availability increased by 5%, most notably in the western half of the country. Regions and states with higher freight densities include the Northwest, California, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Indiana, Ohio, Tennessee, and the Carolinas.
