Market Conditions 10/30/2016-11/5/2016

This week's market has shown another increase in load to truck demand in most markets. Load availability increased 2% and truck availability decreased by 1%. When taking all averages, reefer rates increased 0.5%, van and flatbed rates held steady. Taking an average of rate points from various metrics, we have found the national average rates to be the following: Reefer: $1.95/mi, Van: $1.67/mi, Flatbed: $1.92/mi.

Refrigerated Freight

The Upper Midwest and Northwest regions of the U.S. are nearing the end of the season with freight volumes continuing to decrease. Upstate New York is still shipping apples and cabbage. The Buffalo and Rochester markets have the densest load to truck ratios in the region. Eastern North Carolina is shipping sweet potatoes. Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota have tighter markets, shipping potatoes and meat. Washington state's load volume is down from weeks past. California's outbound rates are showing signs of a slow increase due to slightly higher truckload volumes beginning to ship out. Melons, stone fruit, grapes and mixed vegetables are all shipping out of California.

Look for melons and avocados to begin shipping over the border in TX and AZ this upcoming weeks. The south and Southeast will continue to increase the volumes of squash, cucumbers, eggplant, peppers, green beans, and onions moving out. Georgia and central/northern Florida have started shipping light volumes of produce.
