Market Conditions 1/1/2017-1/7/2017

This week's market maintained last week's elevated load to truck demand for van and reefer freight. Load availability decreased 2% and truck availability increased by 7%. When taking all averages, reefer rates decreased 2.5%, van rates decreased by 1%, and flatbed rates went up 0.5%. Taking an average of rate points from various metrics, we have found the national average rates to be the following: Reefer: $2.09/mi, Van: $1.78/mi, Flatbed: $1.94/mi.

Refrigerated Freight

The reefer market's high demand for trucks continued again this week. The entire country with the exception of California, the Northwest and Florida had a shortage of trucks. The Buffalo and Rochester markets continue to have the densest load to truck ratios in the Northeast, shipping various foods and dairy. California's outbound rates have come down slightly and Florida's rates have dropped to almost half of the previous week.

The Mexican border crossings have started and will continue with elevated load volumes. There was very little truck availability around Nogales, AZ and McAllen/ Laredo, TX this week. Central and south Florida will continue to increase the volumes of squash, cucumbers, eggplant, peppers, green beans and melons have just started shipping as well.

Dry Freight

On a national average, load availability decreased by 3%, truck postings increased 5%. Similar to the reefer market, the van market was tight for the entire continental United States with the exception of California, the Northwest and Florida again this week.

Diesel Pricing

Fuel prices increased by 4.6 cents, bringing the national average price to $2.586 per gallon. This marks a $0.375 increase from the same week last year.
