Market Conditions 6/25/2017-7/1/2017

Load to truck ratios and demand spiked this week mostly due to the Independence Day push. Load availability increased by 5% and truck availability decreased by 4%. Reefer, van, and flatbed ratios remain high with rates jumping sharply because of the increased demand. Rates and volumes on the spot market have now met 2015 levels. When taking all averages, reefer rates increased by 2%, van rates increased by 2.5%, and flatbed rates increased by 0.5%. Taking an average of rate points from various metrics, we have found the national average rates to be the following: Reefer: $2.19/mi, Van: $1.86/mi, Flatbed: $2.20/mi.

The 4th of July push has caused spot market volumes in the entire US to rise and in some cases double compared to the previous week. This applies to flatbed, van, and reefer freight.

Refrigerated Freight

Volumes in the reefer market increased this week with produce shipments remaining high in southern and Midwestern states. There was a strong shortage of available equipment on the spot market in the South, Southeast, Midwest, and the Texas border crossing this week. The heaviest volumes in the Southeast have transitioned to northern Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina. California's produce shipments have decreased from the peak of a couple weeks ago. The market regions with the highest load to truck densities include New Mexico, Texas, the Heartland, Midwest, Gulf Coast states, and the Southeast.

Dry Freight

On a national average, load availability increased by 5.5% and truck postings decreased by 8%. Similar to the reefer market, the van market had the highest load to truck densities in the Heartland, Texas, Midwest, Gulf Coast states, and the Southeast. These areas of higher densities also offer the highest outbound rates.

Diesel Pricing

Diesel prices dropped 2.4 cents this week, bringing the national average price to $2.465 per gallon. This marks a 3.9 cent increase from the same week last year.
