Market Conditions 7/2/2017-7/8/2017

This week's market has shown a decrease in load to truck demand. Load availability decreased by 4% and truck availability decreased by 1%. While reefer, van, and flatbed ratios remain high, there was a sharp decrease in demand from last week's push. Rates and volumes on the spot market have now met 2015 levels. When taking all averages, reefer rates decreased by 2.5%, van rates decreased by 1%, and flatbed rates remained flat. Taking an average of rate points from various metrics, we have found the national average rates to be the following: Reefer: $2.13/mi, Van: $1.84/mi, Flatbed: $2.20/mi.

As seen below, densities overall have fallen off from last week but are on par with recent weeks volumes. The 4th of July push caused spot market volumes in the entire US to rise and in some cases double and this week has been a bound back to normalcy. This applies to flatbed, van, and reefer freight.

Refrigerated Freight

Volumes in the reefer market decreased this week with produce shipments remaining high in southern and Midwestern states. There remains a shortage of available equipment on the spot market in the South, Southeast, Midwest, and the Texas border crossing this week. The heaviest produce volumes were in the Midwest, South, and Southeast, excluding Florida. California's produce shipments have decreased from the peak of a couple weeks ago. We anticipate produce volumes to spike sharply in the upcoming weeks in the Northeast and Upper Midwest. The market regions with the highest load to truck densities include New Mexico, Texas, the Heartland, Midwest, Gulf Coast states, and the Southeast.

Dry Freight

On a national average, load availability decreased by 2% and truck postings increased by 1.5%. Similar to the reefer market, the van market had the highest load to truck densities in the Heartland, Texas, Midwest, Gulf Coast states, and the Southeast. These areas of higher densities also offer the highest outbound rates.

Diesel Pricing

Diesel prices increased 0.7 cents this week, bringing the national average price to $2.472 per gallon. This marks a 4.9 cent increase from the same week last year.
