Market Conditions 7/16/2017-7/22/2017

The over the road market remains very dynamic as we continue through the middle of July. Load availability decreased by 1.5% and truck availability was unchanged. When taking all averages, reefer rates decreased by 0.5%, and van and flatbed rates remained unchanged. Taking an average of rate points from various metrics, we have found the national average rates to be the following: Reefer: $2.11/mi, Van: $1.84/mi, Flatbed: $2.18/mi.

As seen below, densities overall are on par with recent weeks volumes. We anticipate volumes and rates to remain fairly flat through the remainder of July and part of August. This applies to flatbed, van, and reefer freight.

Refrigerated Freight

Volumes in the reefer market decreased overall this week with produce shipments remaining high in the Midwestern and east coast states. Spot rates have dipped in the Southeast, Plains States, and the Southwest. The heaviest produce volumes this week were in the Midwest, South, and Texas. California's produce shipments are on the lighter side for the time being. We anticipate produce volumes to continue to increase in the upcoming weeks in the Northeast and Upper Midwest. The market regions with the highest load to truck densities include New Mexico, Texas, the Heartland, and the Midwest.
