Market Conditions 7/30/2017-8/5/2017

Load to truck ratios and demand leveled off this week. Load availability increased by 0.5% and truck availability increased by 1%. When taking all averages, reefer rates remained flat, van rates decreased by 0.5%, and flatbed rates remained flat. Taking an average of rate points from various metrics, we have found the national average rates to be the following: Reefer: $2.11/mi, Van: $1.81/mi, Flatbed: $2.19/mi.

As seen below, densities overall are on par with recent weeks volumes. We anticipate volumes and rates to remain relatively flat through the remainder of August. This applies to flatbed, van, and reefer freight.

Refrigerated Freight

Volumes in the reefer market continue to increase in the north with produce shipments increasing in the Midwestern and east coast states. Spot rates have dipped in the South, Southeast, and the Southwest. The heaviest produce volumes this week were in the Plains states, Midwest, and the Northeast. California's produce shipment volumes remain light for the time being. We anticipate produce volumes to continue to remain elevated in the upcoming weeks in the Northeast and Upper Midwest. The market regions with the highest load to truck densities include Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, Missouri, and Arkansas.

Dry Freight

On a national average, load availability decreased slightly (0.5%) compared to the previous week. Truck postings remained flat. The van market had the highest load to truck densities in the Mississippi River valley, Midwest, and the Northeast. These areas of higher densities also offer the highest outbound rates.

Diesel Pricing

Diesel prices increased 2.4 cents this week, bringing the national average price to $2.531 per gallon. This marks a 18.3 cent increase from the same week last year.
